How to install cPanel and WHM

cPanel is a Linux-based graphical interface that allows administrators, resellers and end-users to control their web hosting options. There are various aspects of a server/website that can be controlled through cPanel such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, PHP, Apache, Perl, BIND, and email services such as SMTP, IMAP and POP3. In this article we’re going to take a look at how to install cPanel and WHM. However, it’s important to note before we start that once cPanel is installed, it is not easily removed. There are guides available online for the uninstall process, but for the most part, once installed, you will have to reformat the server in order to remove cPanel.

The installation

In order to install both cPanel and WHM on the server, you will have to run the following command:

cd /home && curl -o latest -L && sh latest

This command will change your session to the directory “home”, download the latest versions of both cPanel and WHM, and then run the installation script. As you can see, the process is very straightforward and automatic. Once the download and installation is finished, you will be able to make full use of both applications.

Important notes

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • cPanel is a piece of software designed for commercial hosting, and, as such, it is only licensed to publicly visible, static IPs. If you have a dynamic, internal, sticky or reversed IP, you will not be able to license cPanel.
  • cPanel does not provide an uninstaller.
  • cPanel and WHM should be installed only on newly-installed operating systems.
  • You will have to be logged in as the root server user when installing cPanel and WHM.
  • It is recommended that you use the installer presented in this guide, and that you do not install any other services before cPanel and WHM. Otherwise, you will encounter compatibility issues.
  • When installing cPanel and WHM for the first time, the installer goes with the fast installation mode by default. To prevent fast installation mode, you can visit the official cPanel website, and consult the documentation that outlines the steps for customising your own installation.
